Yay! We found one of my favorite things! Miss Jude loves loves initials in trees, aloe plants, bamboo, whatever. Can you find the pic from my Morocco adventure of the bamboo? Help me with my scavenger hunt…I have found these in Paris and Rabat and Seattle and DC and Italy and…where next?
Amin on the 5 minute descent into the Woodley Park metro station. I miss NYC subways…they might smell weird, but at least they are well-lit. Extra credit folks: can you find 4 negative slope lines? can you find three positive slope lines? some parallel zero slope lines? If Amin’d head is the origin, will any intersect his cabesa?
Micahel only looks disappointed because I told him this was the elephant we rode the metro an hour to see. He was happy to see the real ones 5 minutes later. Amin found the fire hydrant “statue”. I was super excited to be 10 feet away from an elephant…until he peed for 2 minutes straight then ran away! Then I ran away.
math monday: why is x the unknown? With Arabic and Spanish and Amharic and English and Urdu all in the same classroom, we like to make up our own words and variations, too! Like “I-saw-some-leaves” triangles and Easy Peasey Lemon Squeezie. Watch the 4 minute video!!!

Amin overlooking the tigers at the National Zoo. He reminded them that he really is way too skinny to be eaten and quite salty after a bag of potato chips.
thursday thingsIlovelist: my former students going out into the world to do amazing things! Marcio was in Haiti during the earthquake and returned to help and there he found his brand new bride. Bendiciones Mr. and Mrs. Nunes!
wednesday’s words of wisdom: who are you talking about with whom? what events are you chatting about? what is your great idea?
artes en martes: Andrea Joseph takes the ordinary and draws it into a better version of real. what would you like to redraw? what is a little treasure you would like to capture?
schmore’s new addition to my #art wall. Love it schmoreasaurus and happy birthday!
huma’s creation in progress
activity with the kids on rotational symmetry and a trip to the copy machine to photocopy one 45 degree section—3 regular copies & 4 negative copies
So, there’s twitter and FB status updates, but what would you write in one line to capture each day? A praise? a worry? a prayer? a confession? a celebration of some little miracle that you experienced? I tried it for a month and had a list of so many blessings.
thursday thingsIlovelist: I love any arcade where we can find skeeball. It’s just my fave game even though I stink a little at it. I’ve played in Hawaii, El Salvador, and the best was in Coney Island with Cory after a long subway ride. Maybe superhero Caine will make me one this summer (http://cainesarcade.com/). hmmm… maybe a little end-of-the-year project for my smartypants math kids.
The Pros of beign a student: FREEDOM! pride in your accomplishments, hugging your family, having choices, traveling, learning about the world, contributing to the community, trying new things, expressing yourself, using your talents, etc. It is a bargain to educate a young person…or an any age person. EDUCATION TO PREVENT INCARCERATION.
